Comeback Kid, originally uploaded by glamourously.

I’ve been away in Conferenceland and on vacation the past few weeks. I return to overflowing RSS and email in-flows, and plunge directly into the howling maw that is the BC Educational Technology User’s Group 2008 workshop, this year themed on creativity.

I’m on tap to discoordinate an open session for people to play with digital media. I suspect the activity will consist of me sitting alone in a computer lab while the participants eat lunch and drink coffee elsewhere. Perhaps I’m wrong, but if it does indeed play out that way maybe I’ll get a little blogging done.

OK, what did I miss while I was away?

  1. Hey, Comeback Kid…they’ve got a different Jeremy Hiebert (or did). Great shot, decent band and pretty punk overall.

But edupunk? Blech. I can’t think of anything less punk than education. If there is an alternative subculture brewing in educational technology, let’s call it what it is: yet another attempt to find different (cutting edge! rockin’! technological!) ways to get students achieving the goals of the establishment.

If we have to endure the oxymoronic term at all, let’s agree that someone like Illich set the bar for edupunk. If you’re working in the system, trying to use the web to get students to do better on their exams, you’re pulling off edutop40 — mainstream all the way, with some educountry in rural school districts. If you’re pushing the boundaries a bit and questioning the fundamentals of the systems that employ you, maybe you’re getting into a bit of edujazz.

So I’ve probably taken the metaphor too far, and yes, I’m being a little pedantic (melodramatic?). But do you hear what I’m sayin’?

  2. ha haha…Sid Vicious’s entire graveYARD turned over when you typed that. And just when I was enjoying taking pot-shots from the outside, you go and invite me to something constructive that requires actual work. What a killjoy!
    😉

Wikipedia’s Illich entry is decent, actually.
