The effects of toxic mental pollution from casual Internet consumption must not be underestimated. A couple weeks ago I came across this bit of adolescent cut-up… I took some grim satisfaction at seeing objects of my ire subjected to indignity, and considered linking to it here, ultimately deciding against it because, well, it’s a pretty stupid joke, not especially well-executed, and there’s little reason to expect anyone else to enjoy it as much as I did.
But the mighty Gay Bar meme refuses to leave quietly, as I should have expected, I suppose. Fab WFMU DJ Scott Williams has initiated the Great Summer Gay Bar Magnum Dopus Mixup Contest, and the entries keep on coming (1, 2). And the indispensable Fluxblog alerts us to a Tom Scharpling entry with a decidedly Jandek-like feel (2.3 MB MP3).
And as I hear all this, I can’t shake the vision of George and Tony partying it up in a homoerotic warmongering frenzy… it’s a potent, foul-smelling stew in my brain and it’s dominating my consciousness. I find myself singing “Gay Bar” at the children’s library, on the bus, and at work… it’s only a matter of time before the hammer falls.
I can only hope that this posting has some sort of cathartic, purifying effect, and that now I can get on with what passes for my normal life.
